ABOUT KWAZULU-NATAL SHARKS BOARD
There is an organisation situated in Umhlanga, Kwa-Zulu Natal that is unique in the world and that is the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.

Established in 1964 to provide shark attack prevention measures for beach users, the KZNSB  proudly performs this duty on a daily basis at popular bathing beaches from Richards Bay to Port Edward.  Launching their boats at dawn, highly trained and experienced teams negotiate a sometimes volatile surf zone to reach their installations and begin the task of checking each net for entangled marine life, ensuring all is in order before the onset of beach users.

SHARK ATTACK
Although shark attack can spell economic disaster for the local hotels, resorts and businesses dependent upon the holidaymakers, it is necessary to put the threat of  shark attack into perspective.  The sharks mostly pose little or no threat to humans who enter the sea, however, there are certain factors and conditions which can play a role in increasing the possibility of an encounter.

You can stay safe by following these simple do’s and don’ts:

Do always swim at beaches offering the protection of shark nets.

Do  obey instructions from the lifeguards

Do remember Alcohol and swimming don’t mix.

Don’t swim at dawn and dusk when sharks are more active and come inshore to feed.

Don’t swim in a dirty water or in a river mouth.

Don’t swim with an open wound as sharks can detect blood in the water.

Don’t ever swim alone.

CONSERVATION FOCUSES ON SHARKS
While its key focus is protecting humans from shark attack, the Kwazulu-Natal Sharks Board actively promotes the conservation of all marine life and has built up a worthy reputation of ecological conscientiousness.  Net reduction together with the policy of tagging and releasing all live specimens has resulted in a significant drop in fatalities.

The Kwazulu-Natal Sharks Board presents public awareness programmes :  An audio-visual presentation and shark dissection can be seen on Tuesdays to Thursdays at 09h00 and 14h00, and Sundays at 14h00.  Browse the exhibition area and curio shop.  Costs: Adult R25 and Children\Pensioners R12.

For the more adventurous, an early morning boat cruise to see not only the shark nets being cleared off Durban’s Golden Mile, but the opportunistic viewing of marine animals and seabirds as well.
