The Mac Mac Quad Trails offer exciting adventure for quad bike riders that cover little used trails in the picturesque Mpumalanga Escarpment area. Most of these trails are off limits to the general public. Mac Mac Eco Adventures & Getaways have a sole concession from York Timbers that allows us to take quad bike riders on an eco friendly exploration of 18 000ha in one of the most beautiful areas of South Africa. The quad trails showcase spectacular mountain trails, stunning views, waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, hidden valleys and pristine forests. We cater for a variety of needs. We do slow scenic rides, family rides and fast rides. The guides ride Suzuki LTZ 400's.

We take a minimum of 2 riders and do not put a maximum limit on participants. We have marked a permanent 120km route where you can follow the signs and ride on your own speed, stopping as you prefer. We also have regular 160km forest rides. As with all bigger events, we have paramedics and backup vehicles on standby. We have had more than 200 quads on occasions, and are experienced in organizing any type of event. You just contact us, tell us how many people you are, what type of riding you want, and what you have in mind. We then put the event together. We can organize from 1 hour events up to 3-day events, including accommodation and catering. Besides catering for people with their own quads, we also have rentals available.

One of our Routes

We meet at Mac Mac Forest Retreat (halfway between Sabie and Graskop). After a briefing we travel through plantations and indigenous forests on the way to Burgers Pass (the original route used to transport provisions for Pilgrims Rest). The Burger’s Pass road takes us through some stunning scenery and views. We then turn off the Burger’s Pass road and travel towards Mauchberg.

On the climb to the top of Mauchberg we enjoy some memorable views of the immediate area. We stop at the top of Mauchberg to enjoy one of the most spectacular views over the Mpumalanga Escarpment and Lowveld. On a clear day places like Sabie, Graskop, God’s Window, Spitskop, Bakenskop, Mariepskop, the gold mines outside Pilgrim’s Rest, and the Kruger National Park will be visible.
Over the last few years quads have become very populart. Besides the many individuals that spend their weekends riding, many families have found this is an excellent way to spend their weekends together.

The Mac Mac Summit Route is an ideal introduction to one of South Africa's most scenic and historic regions and is definitely people and vehicle friendly. All too many 4x4 trails are either potentially damaging to lifestyle 4x4s, or daunting to newcomers to the 4x4 scene. But Mac Mac rates as one of the easiest around.

Grading: 1 – 2: The focus is not on obstacles, but rather on scenery and family outings with easy driving along well-maintained tracks and some tar link roads.

Example of a 1-day trail.

We meet at Mac Mac Forest Retreat (halfway between Sabie & Graskop) at 08:00am. After coffee and a briefing we leave for Mauchberg (2115masl). This route will take us through pine plantations, patches of indigenous forests, and stunning views. We follow the existing forestry roads. So the focus is not obstacle orientated, but rather on scenery and family outings.
From the top of Mauchberg we enjoy another spectacular view over the Escarpment area. On a clear day places like Sabie, Graskop, Mariepskop, Nyaka dam, and Forest Falls will be great to view.

We also discuss the gold history of the area. The places where the diggers searched for gold will also be pointed out.

After Mauchberg we enjoy more views and pine plantations while we go down to Christmas Pools (Blyde River). From Christmas Pools we take the old Burgers Pass road and follow the Blyde River to the town of Pilgrim’s Rest.

We stop somewhere next to the river for a gold panning demonstration. Everyone then get a change to try there luck with gold panning.

After lunch at a restaurant in Pilgrim’s Rest (not included in price), we bid each other farewell.
Total km’s for the day: +- 80 km. We arrive in Pilgrims Rest around 2 - 3 pm.

Rates for the 1-Day trail:

(These rates includes up to 3 people / vehicle and do not include accommodation or camping)

Catering: Bring your own picnic basket for lunch.
