The day before coming back to JHB, I ducked out
of family/friends braai [much to the unhappiness of my wife] and
arrived at GIBA GORGE to be warmly welcomed by the guys at the workshop
area because I needed my cats eye reattached , started chatting to the
guys because I was already impressed, they asked whether I had ridden
there before, and when I said no I was promptly assigned a ride guide to
take me over a few course options.
I asked how many km's and the reply was about 12km/s!
To be quickly followed by "but come back to the lodge after 12 and if you want to go out again then please feel free to do so"! And off I went with my ride guide who happened to mention that he
was a beginner at which point I should have had a small
inkling of what was to come!
From the word go you get right into it [so it is advisable to warm the legs up in the KIDS BIKE PARK first]. We went out on some incredible single tracks, uphills where I was
more concerned about tipping backwards then I was about the ache in my
legs, downhills so steep even my guide went over the front at one point,
camber turns , drops , fast riding , through a few streams, a bit of a
portage and just generally fantastic riding.

And one jeep track consisting of two strips of tar with grass in between that got my heart rate right up.
I kept wondering how my heart rate would have been at altitude.
With various trails for various levels of riding there is something for everyone.
Then finished the ride up through a forested area in the nature reserve to turn around for a thrilling downhill.
All in all I forgot all about the kms being ridden and for a long time I just enjoyed the thrill of mountain biking again.
To then check to see that we only covered 20kms and also understood
why the guys at the counter had a small grin on their faces when I
asked about the number of kms and their reply was ONLY 12KMS!
You get more out of these rides then you get out of 50kms in Gauteng.
Why it is more then just a simple mountain bike park?
Because it really does cater for the family , and this is something that no facility in GAUTENG does.
1. A bike park come trick park for the kids [or adults], to keep them busy while you are riding,
2. Guided trips for kids who can barely ride [this means supervised rides]
3. Picnic like gardens with manicured lawns for moms to put out a blanket and read a book
So everyone not interested in enjoy lawn cricket or kick a ball around or just have a nap under shady trees
4. Great restaurant, B&B for overnight stays,5 star ablution facilities.
Riding in dense vegetation, through forests, with incredible views
and an opportunity to get your heart rate up where it has never been
before-and right on the doorstep of anyone into riding in KZN. WOW is the best way to describe it!
