Midmar Boating & Hire is the designated boat hire and accessories company situated on Midmar dam in the Natal midlands. Named after Midmar in Scotland the dam is situated just off the N3,about 27 km from Pietermaritzburg and 7 km from Howick. The GPS co-ordinates are 29 30s 30 11e. Entrance fee to the dam is R20 per head/ full day or R12 per head /half day.

Messing about in boats is a great way to relax, unwind and get away from our stressful life styles and with that in mind we have expanded our range of boats to encompass as many different experiences as possible. Canoes, Paddle skis, Pedal boats and small power boats are all available to the complete novices.

Clients who have had a bit more experience can utilize power boats up to and including 15 hp. These boats have a seating capacity of between 4 and 6 adults and are suitable for a leisurely cruise or a spot of fishing. Halcats or sailing dinghies and windsurfers are available for those who prefer the peacefulness of a gentle sail or for the adrenalin junkie when the wind starts to howl. Prior experience is definitely needed for the latter. For those with a need for speed we have Power boats suitable for ski-ing, wakeboarding and tubing  also available, subject to the skipper having a valid SAMSA license.

We also hire out all the water toys such as kneeboards, skis, ski ropes, snakes, tubes, etc. Ski-ing, wakeboarding and tubing behind our luxury 8 seater Evolution bow rider with 200hp mercury can also be arranged by prior appointment.

 For those who do not have any experience and do not wish to go “hands on” we have the Leisure liner experience which consists of a SAMSA licensed 9 metre catamaran with undercover and enclosed seating for 25 passengers plus 2 crew members powered by 2x50hp outboard motors. The leisure liner will take you around part of the picturesque dam while viewing animal and bird life with the giant Drakensburg mountain range in the back ground. Trips range in time from 1 hour upwards. This boat is also suitable for business, wedding, school outings, end of year parties and sunset cruises by prior arrangement only. Limited wheel chair access.

Midmar boating & hire is a complete boat shop. We are part of a bigger organization[PITTS MARINE and industrial Pmb] that handles all aspects of boating from manufacturing fiberglass boats, trailers, outboard  motors, servicing, accessories, repairs and renovations, sales of second hand boats and boating equipment. All of these services are also available from Midmar boating & hire. A mechanic is always on standby over weekends to handle all those unexpected mechanical gremlins that occur from time to time. We also have a basic tuck shop selling sweets, chips, cold drinks,

Charcoal, firewood and other odds and ends.

All boats are fully equipped with the necessary safety gear including life jackets for all sizes. We will quiz you on your claimed skills. Please remember that this is done for reasons of safety, to your family, to yourself and to other water users. Please note that the drinking and driving rule applies as much on water as it does in your car. Conditions of hire rules must be abided to. Bad weather conditions may shorten your hire period for safety reasons.
