: The Gentle Giant...
Safari Adventure:
The Gentle Giant...
Safaris are synonymous with Africa. Africa is a continent that holds much fascination for people world-wide. Even before Joy Adamson brought the beauty into every child’s life worldwide in her book Elsa – The Story of a Lioness, people everywhere have dreamed of seeing the wilds of Africa.

The “safari” has become famous in many circles as the ultimate way to experience Africa. This usually involves traveling in a 4x4 vehicle on an overland journey usually to view, sometimes to hunt, game.

South Africa has much to offer in the way of Safari’s. While most often a safari is taken in the lush bushveld regions, there are also opportunities to take in the coastal, wetlands, fynbos, grasslands and arid desert conditions offered in this remarkable country.

Without doubt though when people thing of Africa they think of the magnificent scenery of the bushveld. Nothing beats the view of red sun setting behind a thornveld (flat top acacia) tree.

If you manage to capture this while hearing the distant beating drums from a local traditional village you could easily have stepped back into Livingstone’s time when man was alone against the African elements.

Whether you enjoy the Big Five (Elephant, Rhino, Lion, Leopard and Buffalo) or whether the smaller birds, insects, grasses and trees hold your interest, there is definitely something for everyone.

The highlight of a Safari is usually the stories at the end of the day around the camp fire and many have relived their greatest moments in the fading embers that draw the day to a close.
A word on Safaris and Game Drives:
"If an animal does something, we call it instinct; if we do the same thing for the same reason, we call it intelligence." - Will Cuppy

"Conservation is sometimes perceived as stopping everything cold, as holding whooping cranes in higher esteem than people. It is up to science to spread the understanding that the choice is not between wild places or people, it is between a rich or an impoverished existence for man." - Thomas E. Lovejoy

Equipment:

For the true African safari you will definitely be heading off road and a 4x4 vehicle is a must. Often these come with long range fuel tanks and water – a scarce commodity once you are out in the bush.

Most activity providers have a series of vehicles that provide height and safety so that you can enjoy the best possible views while getting quite close to the game.

The most important equipment you can take is a good quality camera preferably with a range of lenses, most importantly the telephoto lens. Most animals are well camouflaged and without a telephoto lens you may well get home and then play a game of “spot the animal”.

A tripod is also recommended for capturing crystal clear shots with long exposures. Particularly important for the sunsets and sunrises, which Africa is well known for.

In addition a hat, sunblock and sun glasses are highly recommended all year round.

Zebras in the wild...

Safety:

If you are traveling in a vehicle supplied by the activity provider you will be driven by a trained guide who knows how to navigate the terrain and will be able to interpret what mood the animals are in by assessing their movements and noises.

Some areas are Malaria endemic and you will have to take prophylactics. Don’t underestimate this disease, it is deadly.

Eco-Tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourism industry in South Africa. While the country welcomes tourists specifically interested in this sector it is important to remember that the environment is precious and you must take only photo’s and leave only footprints.

Interesting Facts:

South Africa has 17 National Parks, each one with an abundant and diverse range of flora and fauna.

Did you know?
  • Kgalagadi is the first Transfrontier Park to be established in Africa?
  • It is also known as the 'Peace Park'?
  • At 3.8 million hectares, it is nearly twice the size of Kruger National Park?
  • It is the most North Westerly National Park in South Africa?
  • The name, 'Kgalagadi' is derived from the SAN language and means "Place of thirst?"

History:

Eco-tourism has resulted in a huge increase in the number of public and private Game Reserves in South Africa. It is now possible to see wild animals in their natural habitat in most of the 9 provinces in South Africa.

Check out the Official South African Parks (SanParks) website here. There site hosts details of South African National Parks, their camps and wildlife and community relations. It will help tourists and visitors with planning trips to the parks - self-drive safaris, game viewing, accommodation tariffs, adventure activities such as guided walks and hiking, bird-watching, 4x4 trails, sight-seeing, cultural and historical experiences, mountain biking, golf, canoeing, swimming and many more.

Safaris in South Africa are diverse and rewarding experiences that everyone should afford in their lifetime. For any who cannot we beckon all photographers and videographers to try and do justice to the endless beauty of African Safaris.
