Horse Trail Adventure:
Sea, Sand and Footprints on Horseback
Horseback riding along paths through the veld or bush is one of the best ways to enjoy the South African outdoors. The quiet solitude provides a sense of peace and “at one” with both nature and the trusty stead.

The flora and fauna can be viewed from a wonderful vantage point and the ability to traverse the countryside quickly and easily enables some wonderfully long out rides to be achieved in a day.

Many trails are available on a day or ½ day basis and there are many operators that provide overnight and even 3-4 day out rides for the more adventurous.

There are a number of different styles of out rides available too which can provide you with that much dreamt about canter along a beach at sunset or the opportunity to take a gentle walk through a game reserve getting close to giraffe, kudu and zebra.

A word on Horse Trails & Safaris:
There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. ~Winston Churchill

Heaven is high and earth wide. If you ride three feet higher above the ground than other men, you will know what that means. ~Rudolf C. Binding

I can always tell which is the front end of a horse, but beyond that, my art is not above the ordinary. ~Mark Twain

Equipment:

It is important to discuss with the activity operator your riding ability so that they can choose for you the horse from their stable which is most suited to give you the best ride possible. Decide whether you want to go bare back (without a saddle) or which type of saddle will be most comfortable for you for the duration of the ride.

A waterproof raincoat and hat for the summer months of October to April is advisable as you can experience hot days and pleasant nights, low humidity, with thunderstorms in the afternoons.

And, because you’ll be experiencing some wonderful scenery from an unusual vantage point don’t forget to pack your camera and, if you have, a set of binoculars.

Safety:

Never leave the stable area without wearing a helmet – to protect your head in case of a fall and also without checking weather conditions and taking an ample supply of water. The South African outdoors can be a harsh environment to endure should something go wrong while you are out and you need to be prepared for any eventuality.

It is also advisable to wear suitable riding gear (jodhpurs with chaps), covered footwear (comfortable riding boots or shoes with a low heel and rubber sole), and a long sleeved cotton shirt to protect you from the sun.

Also, take a sun block and apply it liberally and often and always have a jersey or coat for the winter months of May to September when you can experience warm, dry days and cool to cold nights.

Interesting Facts:

Horses and ponies are measured in hands. A hand is equivalent to four inches. Anything less than 14.2 hands is classed as a pony. The tallest horse ever recorded was a massive 21 hands and weighed 1,370kg. The smallest was only 36cm!

There are more than 150 breeds of horses in the world.

The oldest horse ever recorded was called Old Billy and lived for a whopping 62 years. Old Billy was born in 1760 and spent his life towing barges along canals in Lancashire. He died in 1822.

The longest ever verifiable jump was 8.3 metres in 1951 by Amado, a horse owned by Colonel Lopez Del Hierro.

The fastest recorded horse was Grand National winner, Red Rum. He completed the 1973 Grand National course, a distance of 4.5 miles, in 9 minutes 1.9 seconds. This meant the punters’ favourite was averaging about 30 miles per hour! Not bad for a race horse on a course with jumps!

History:

Man has been riding horses for many hundreds of years. Before the arrival of modern forms of transport, this was the primary means of getting from Point A to Point B (aside from walking of course).

It is only recently, with the growth of tourism, that several operators have started offering guided horse trails in some of the most scenic areas of South Africa. There are beach rides, bush rides and mountain rides. One usually can access areas on horseback which are otherwise inaccessible and the extra elevation makes for a fantastic vantage point.
